Weakness Areas
There are parts of the body that searchers are often reluctant or embarrassed to search thoroughly during a routine frisk or pat-down over a persons clothing. We refer to these as the 'weakness areas'. It can be for religious, ethnic or sexual reasons that these areas are often not as closely scrutinized as they should be. If search personnel are made aware of these weakness areas, they are able to adjust their search technique in order to ensure more attention is paid to them. Although searchers should maintain total professionalism at all times, and respect the privacy of the general public, should any individual arouse suspicion but a cursory search is all that can be undertaken, the weakness areas should never be neglected.
Deep Concealment
The degree to which a person is searched will depend on the level of weapons smuggling threat and the facility afforded to the searchers to search adequately. A clothing check, frisk or pat-down is only a cursory examination of a persons body through his/her clothing. If a weapon or weapons are suspected of being secreted about a person, a more in-depth search would be necessary, and items of clothing may have to be removed. When there is a high risk of deep concealment a complete strip search of the suspect would be required, as deep concealment of a weapon is specifically designed to defeat a cursory pat-down. A full body search will allow a detailed check of all items of clothing including difficult items such as underwear. Under extreme circumstances a more intimate inspection may be necessary including body cavity search.
